Phokhara Fewa Lake
Event Category Phewa Lake (often referred to locally as Phewa Tal) is the center of activity in Pokhara. Whether you are looking for cultural festivals, boat races, or the famous lakeside nightlife, here is what usually happens around the lake and the costs involved.
Major Annual Events at Phewa Lake
Phewa New Year Festival (April): Held during the Nepali New Year (mid-April), the entire Lakeside stretch (from Khahare to Sahid Chowk) becomes a pedestrian-only zone. Expect food stalls, cultural parades, and live music.
Pokhara Street Festival (December/January): This is Nepal’s largest street festival, held to celebrate the English New Year. It spans over 3.5 km of the Lakeside road with the motto "Eat on the street, dance on the street."
Dragon Boat Race (June/July): An exciting international event where teams race traditional dragon boats across the lake, typically held near the Barahi Ghat. Upcoming for May 2026
Ganga Aarati: Every evening (around 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM) at the Barahi Ghat. This is a beautiful spiritual ceremony with lamps and music, similar to the one at Pashupatinath but on the water. It is free to watch.
International Conferences: Several global academic events are scheduled in Pokhara this month (May 13th and 19th), which may bring more crowds to the upscale lakeside resorts.
Full Moon Night: On May 31st, many lakeside cafes host special live acoustic sets or "Full Moon" dinners overlooking the water.
Traveler Tips
Evening Walk: The best time for the "Lakeside vibe" is after 5:00 PM when the lights come on and the restaurants start their live music.
Safety: Always wear your life jacket on the lake, even if the water looks calm.
Negotiation: While boat prices are generally fixed by the association, you can sometimes negotiate for "half-day" or "full-day" boat hires if you want to explore the quieter western side of the lake.
